Derma Roller for Scars
What is a scar?
Scar is a healing result of some trauma or damage to the skin where the dermis (deep layer) of the skin has been injured. During the healing process special healing cells called fibroblasts migrate to the site of injury. These fibroblasts cover the damaged area and form collagen which is the building block of scar tissue.
Normally, collagen fibers line up in a parallel fashion like spaghetti in a package, forming a bridge across the wound. This collagen material is constantly remodeling for almost two years after injury. Sometime in the first two years, this bridge of collagen tissue will gradually contract and pull the edges of the wound tightly together. This process results in a scar that is flat and very thin. The scar then becomes dormant (not “active” any more). When the scar tissue is largely “dormant” it requires some stimulation to energize and loosen it.
